I purchased a 2002 PT Cruiser form a usde car dealer. I was told the transmission was recently overhauled, but I have no written proof of this. I have had nothing but trouble with the trani ever sence. It has left me stranded out of twon twice, and this last time prevented me from getting to an even for which I am now out a lot of money. The 1st time, I had the filter replaced, which I was told was the original filter on a trani with 80k miles on it, and it ran fine untill last weekend while traveling the interstate, the speedometer went out, the the trani did to. I have had it looked at by a chrysler expert, as well as a 2nd opinion from a regular mechanic, they both said the trani is shot and has to be replaced. I have only had this car for 3 months, and I baught it out right. Does the dealer I got it from have any legal responsilility for the trani replacement, or am I now stuck with the bill? Is there anything I can do?

I am assuming the car is not under warranty. If so, this means you bought it "as is". If indeed, that is the case, they are not liable. Lemon laws only cover new vehicles.
However, if they told you the transmission was in good shape then they are in breach of contract. This is called misrepresentation. But then again, if you bought the car "as is" then it really doesn't matter what they told you unless the misrepresentation was used to induce you to buy the car. That's going to be hard for you to prove.
this is how people get beat up, i would sugest finding the dealer who sold you the car and showing how you really feel about him, baseball bats r cheap
You have 30 days or 1000 miles which ever comes 1st usually with a used car.
That is why you ALWAYS have a mechanic (other than the 1 at the lot) perform a used car check prior to purchase.
You, my dear have just a learned a very valuable lesson.
You should check with your state's laws regaurding lemons. I think you might get stuck with eating the repair costs.
If the car was bought AS-Is then you are stuck with your car..
unless he gave you something in writing theat stated some type of warranty...

That is what salesman do. Car is out of warranty, I can bet that dealership is not going to say a word that they said the transmission was overhauled.
I am hoping you brought this to there attention when these problems started. Some reputable dealership want the customer happy, and some are not aware of slick promises their sales staff make ( small minority). If it is not in writing you got nothing (lesson learned).
Depends if the car came with no warranty, than they might get away with this. You might be able to go under the lemon law in states that might help you in this problem, or try a small claims court.
Most used cars are sold "As-Is" protecting the seller from liability in the case it blows up ten yards off the dealer's lot.
You might check your local Better Business Bureau--see if the dealer has any other complaints. If there's a pattern, then maybe you could consult an attorney. If he has a history of misleading purchasers you might have some kind of grounds to sue.
Most likely, its going to end up being an expensive life lesson learned.
Not sure of the laws in FLA., but most cars from used dealers will have a warranty but some will have limits ( such as 30 days or X amount of miles, also some will say they only cover certain parts ) find the papers from your car and see if it says anything . If it say it covers the trans, then yes they have to fix it , but most generally they will want "their" mechanic to fix it ( which is probably who supposedly did the work in the first place!) So not sure that that will help any.
If it has any limits on the warranty, then they probably don't or won't have to fix it for you!
( we have had problems twice when buying used.. the first time we spent $8,000 on a mini van and less than two months we had to put $2000 into a new trans... the warranty didn't cover that *part*... the second time we went to a different dealer and were amazed at how helpful they were.. we got stuck on the side of the road and they paid the towing and for all the work as well as let us use another van until ours was fixed! )
