What did you do, in dealing with a housemate that.?

you "thought" had stolen money(a lot of it) from you, but, you weren't sure! What did you do to catch them in the act, to prove it, and did you ever get your cash back?

thanks!
Answers:
threaten to call the police is the easiest way or alternatively, take a video camera and hide it to film the movement so u can find out if there really stole your money.
Unless you can secretly video tape the person taking the money, there isn't much you can do as you need proof. Put a lock on your door, and keep your valuables in that room until you can make other arrangements to move out. And no I never got my things back and neither did my mom. It was a very hard lesson to learn.
GOOD LUCK! I had money stolen from somebody that is related and grew up w/ my man. Can't prove though there's no way it grew legs and wandered off! But He took an ipod which we later found next to the seat where it never would have been. considering it was in the car before he went to get it from the car. The best thing you can do is try to make them feel guilty or put up a hidden camera.
Two suggestions
1) secretly video tape the area where you store your money/purse It isnt all that difficult or expensive nowadays to set this up.

or much easier
2) Either mark all of your cash in some small way that only you will notice or write down the serial numbers on all of your bills. Then keep a close eye on it, as soon as you find any missing try to do something that will let you see what your housemate has for money. Ask to borrow some money (go with whatever the smallest amount is you are missing, like just a buck if you are missing 1's or 5 bucks if 5's and so on) Or if you are missing say a few 5's ask your housemate if they can change out a ten for you, two 5's for a ten, make sure you come up with a good reason for this so they are not suspicious.

This second way allows you to continously check to confirm your suspicions , if your housemate hands you your own money then you've got them red handed. If not either you were wrong of you have to keep trying to catch them.

Obviously when/if you find out for sure this is probably going to create a big problem so dont do this unless you are prepared to confront your them at that time. As far as getting the money back if once caught they dont agree to repay you (which is unlikely) the only chance you would have is to try it in civil court.

Sounds like you already have a good idea what is happening. Good luck.
Since it was only the two of us-it definitely was him. I very quietly put all of his things on the front lawn after I notified the bank and my credit cards. I never got the money back. Sorry.
