Answers:
First, get a restraining order. Talk about it with law enforcement, friends and family so that if he ever does try anything there will be a history.

Don't let the bastard know you're scared. It's what he wants.
Call the cops... duh?

Get a TRO if you think he is serious.
well show up in his house with a gun and ask him what was he saying.
call the police
block him from messaging you
dont make threats in return.
The problem is is that you can't prove it was him, he can deny it because of security issues with messengers, etc. However if you call him and query him about your conversation on the phone, your local/state laws may provide you the opportunity to tape the conversation on the phone. Contact your local police department and ask for their assistance.
The hell you can't prove it was him. You have an IM track.

If the senate can prove that a senator was making passes at an underaged page with email and IM then there is no reason this IM stream cannot serve the same purpose. Your first recourse is (and most importantly!!!!) to call the cops! Cops take seriously women being threatened. Hell, they dont even need facts to through some woman's husband into jail for the night if a woman decides to call the cops on a domestic dispute now-a-days! Call them! File a report! Get a restraining order! And if you live in a state where you can own a gun legally, get one! Protect yourself and your family!
Report him to the police. Using the mail to threaten someone is a federal offense. I am not sure about the internet.
You can get a restraining order but ultimately your protection has to be in your own hands, the police cannot respond fast enough to keep someone from hurting you, so if you rely on other people you really can't be safe.
Change all of your #'s to private ones. Change all your email addresses and block his address.
Be very careful and don't go anywhere alone
You really do have to take things seriously because there are many psychotics out there these days.
I have been through this.
